Description
Seraphim The Burning Ones. The closest to the Divine.
In the vision of the prophet Isaiah, they appear above the throne of the Lord — each possessing six wings. With two they cover their faces in reverence, unable to gaze upon the unbearable holiness of God. With two they cover their feet in humility. And with two they fly, ever in motion, ever in worship.
Their name comes from the Hebrew saraph — “to burn.” They are living flames of love and purity, radiating the very fire of God’s presence. Day and night they never rest, calling to one another in eternal trisagion:
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory.”
One of them took a live coal from the altar and touched it to Isaiah’s lips, purging his sin and commissioning him as a prophet. Such is their power — to purify what is unclean in the presence of absolute holiness.
They do not look like the gentle, winged humans of later art. They are majestic. Terrifying. Beautiful beyond human comprehension. Eyes full of light, bodies like burning serpents of flame, voices that shake the thresholds of heaven.
When you see them, the only fitting response is awe… and the ancient words:
Do not be afraid.
