Description
The McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle is an American all-weather, twin-engine tactical fighter designed by McDonnell Douglas (now part of Boeing). After reviewing proposals, the United States Air Force (USAF) selected the McDonnell Douglas design in 1969 to meet the need for a specialized air superiority fighter. The Eagle first flew in July 1972, and entered service in 1976. It is one of the most successful modern fighters, with over 100 victories and no air combat losses, the majority of those killed being by the Israeli air force[3][4].
The Eagle has been exported to many countries, including Israel, Japan and Saudi Arabia. Although the F-15 was originally envisaged as a pure air superiority aircraft, its design included a secondary ground attack capability that has remained virtually unused[5]. It proved sufficiently flexible that an improved all-weather attack derivative, the F-15E Strike Eagle, was subsequently developed, entered service in 1989 and exported to several countries. Several other variants of the F-15 were produced.
